With so few seats to award, Haas has every incentive to select candidates who not only bring academic excellence and professional accomplishment to campus but also embody the values at the core of the school’s strong culture. Not surprisingly, even in its application essay prompts, Haas seeks to gauge whether you will thrive as a member of its community.

Haas provides ample opportunity for applicants to communicate both who they are and why Haas is the right MBA program for them and their goals. We at Gatehouse encourage you to carefully review the school’s questions and then thoroughly consider all your significant experiences to date—not just in the office but also in college and even before—so you can craft a robust and memorable picture of yourself across the entirety of the Haas application.

Required Essay #1 – Video Essay

Briefly introduce yourself, then tell us what makes you feel alive when you are doing it, and why?

Please share something about yourself that may not be evident in other parts of your application. We are looking for an authentic and introspective response that demonstrates how you will contribute to the MBA class and culture at UC Berkeley Haas.

You will be able to test your audio-visual connection before recording. Video essays should last 1-2 minutes and may not exceed 2 minutes. You have two (2) attempts to record your video essay.

By asking what makes you feel alive when you are doing it, Haas invites you to share something that is genuinely meaningful to you. We love any question that gives applicants an opportunity to communicate what inspires them because these responses often reveal dimensions of a person that are difficult to capture elsewhere in an application. Better yet, because this response is submitted as a video, the admissions committee gets to experience your enthusiasm directly rather than simply reading about it.

The first piece of advice is simple: choose something that truly energizes you. Candidates often assume that because they are applying to business school, they should select a topic that is professional in nature. You certainly can. Perhaps you love solving complex business problems through data analysis or thrive in fast-paced environments where teams come together to tackle difficult challenges. However, we encourage you to think beyond the workplace. Consider your hobbies, interests, passions, and communities. Maybe you are an avid runner who rarely misses a sunrise jog. Perhaps you spend your weekends tinkering on old cars, playing soccer with kids, or going to dance classes. The activity itself matters far less than the authenticity of your connection to it.

Second, spend time reflecting on the why. Haas is not simply asking what you enjoy doing; it is asking what makes you feel alive when you do it. Those are two different questions. What specifically draws you to the activity? How does it make you feel? What does it provide that other experiences do not? What have you learned about yourself through it? Often, the most compelling responses are not really about the activity at all. Rather, they are about the underlying values, motivations, and sources of fulfillment that the activity reveals.

Moreover, reflecting on these questions may reveal that the activity itself is only part of the story. Often, the most interesting insights emerge when you zoom out and consider how the experience has shaped the way you think, lead, or engage with the world around you.

Take the first-thing-in-the-morning runner we mentioned. Initially, she assumed her response would simply be about running. However, when she spent time reflecting on why the activity mattered to her, she realized that running had introduced her to people she would have never met otherwise and taught her how unifying a shared passion can be. She also loves the ability to track and measure her progress, celebrate improvements, and continually strive for more. Over time, she carried that same mindset into the workplace, where she created systems to help new hires monitor and celebrate their own progress as they navigated a steep learning curve.

At that point, the response was no longer just about running. Running was simply the vehicle through which the admissions committee learned about her values, motivations, and initiative. We encourage you to look for similar opportunities in your own response. If there is a broader lesson, value, or perspective that emerges from the activity, exploring it may help Haas understand you more deeply.

Because this is a video response, remember that your delivery matters as well. Make your response vivid and specific. What does the experience look like? Sound like? Feel like? Details will make your response more memorable and help viewers connect with your world. The admissions committee is not expecting a polished performance. Instead, they are looking for authenticity. Speak naturally. Let your enthusiasm show. In many cases, the strongest responses feel more like conversations than presentations.

Finally, remember that this video is one component of a broader application. Ideally, it should stand on its own while also adding something new to the overall picture of who you are. If the rest of your application focuses heavily on your professional accomplishments, this may be an opportunity to showcase a different side of yourself. The goal is not simply to answer the question, but to help Haas understand what genuinely animates you as a person.

Above all, resist the temptation to search for the “right” answer. There isn’t one. The applicants who tend to stand out are not necessarily those with the most unusual hobbies or dramatic stories. They are the ones who use the prompt to share something real.

Required Essay #2

What are your post-MBA career goals, and how will the resources at UC Berkeley Haas help you achieve them? How do you plan to remain adaptable as your career evolves? (300 words max)

With this question, Berkeley Haas gets to the very premise of an MBA program. The MBA is a professional degree; the value proposition of business school is that it will help propel you toward your goals. By asking about your post-MBA aspirations, Haas is seeking to understand both where you want to go and whether the program is well positioned to help you get there.

At the same time, notice that Haas is not merely asking about your goals. It is also asking how you plan to remain adaptable as your career evolves. In other words, Haas wants to see that you have direction without rigidity. The admissions committee is looking for candidates who have thoughtfully considered their future but who also recognize that careers rarely unfold in a perfectly linear fashion.

When crafting your response, begin with where you are headed. Your short- and long-term goals should flow logically from one another, and the admissions committee should be able to understand how your near-term plans position you to achieve your broader aspirations.

An example of non-flowing goals might be: “Short term, I aspire to become an investment banker. Longer term, I hope to run a consumer products company.” While both goals may be perfectly reasonable, the connection between them is unclear. You need to help the admissions committee understand how Point A leads to Point B.

Consider this alternative: “Short term, I seek to become an investment banker focused on consumer retail and consumer products companies. In that role, I will deepen my understanding of industry economics, pricing strategies, and growth models while advising market-leading brands. Over time, I hope to leverage that experience to join and eventually lead a consumer-focused company as its chief financial officer.” Now the reader can clearly see the progression.

Once you have established where you are headed, explain why Haas is the right bridge between where you are today and where you want to be tomorrow. What skills, experiences or perspectives do you need to acquire? Which aspects of the Haas experience will help you close those gaps? Effective responses move beyond generic statements about academic excellence and identify specific courses, programs, clubs, experiential learning opportunities, and elements of the Haas culture that will help the applicant achieve their goals.

Finally, address adaptability thoughtfully. This portion of the essay is not an invitation to abandon your goals or present multiple competing career paths. Rather, it is an opportunity to demonstrate self-awareness and intellectual humility. You will want to show that you recognize that industries evolve and opportunities emerge unexpectedly.

For example, an applicant pursuing a career in clean energy might explain that while their long-term mission is expanding access to sustainable energy solutions, they remain open to pursuing that mission through different functions, business models, or sectors as the market evolves. Another applicant might discuss a commitment to continuous learning, experimentation, or seeking perspectives that challenge their assumptions. The key is to show that while your destination may remain relatively constant, you are thoughtful and flexible about the route.

Remember, adaptability is not the opposite of having a plan. The strongest applicants demonstrate both. They have a clear direction today while recognizing that tomorrow’s opportunities may look different than they currently expect.

Answering this question well requires both introspection and research. Reflect carefully on your professional aspirations, the experiences that have shaped them, and the skills you still need to develop. Then spend time learning about Haas through conversations with students and alumni, information sessions, and independent research. These conversations may also help you think more broadly about the different paths through which you could achieve your long-term objectives.

The more clearly you can articulate both your goals and how Haas will help you pursue them, the more confidence the admissions committee will have that you are prepared to make the most of the MBA experience.

If you would like more tips on crafting your career statement for Haas, watch our video Your Career Statement – Fact, Fiction, and How to Build One.

Supplemental Information: Distance Traveled

At Berkeley Haas, we consider “distance traveled” as the contextual information that helps us understand the unique circumstances, challenges, or influences that have shaped your personal and professional journey.

We invite you to share aspects of your background, personal circumstances, or significant experiences that have meaningfully impacted who you are today and how you’ve reached this point. Please tell us how these experiences have influenced your perspectives, decisions, and aspirations, and how they contribute to the person you are becoming. (300 words max)

This section is optional.

Although Berkeley Haas labels this essay as optional, we encourage applicants to think carefully before deciding to leave it blank. This prompt provides a valuable opportunity to share context that may not fit naturally elsewhere in the application and to help the admissions committee better understand the person behind the résumé.

Too often, applicants read prompts like this and conclude that they have not traveled “far enough” to have a compelling story. We would caution against that mindset. The purpose of this essay is not to compare hardships. Rather, it is to provide context and help Haas understand the experiences that have shaped you. Nearly every applicant has meaningful influences, challenges, or circumstances worth reflecting on.

As you reflect on the prompt, think expansively about the experiences that have most influenced your personal and professional journey. Don’t hold back—family circumstances, cultural influences, economic realities, geographic mobility, caregiving responsibilities, educational opportunities, formative life experiences, and unconventional career paths can all shape who we become and how we view the world. What moments changed how you see yourself or others? What experiences influenced the decisions you have made or the aspirations you now hold? Often, the most compelling responses focus not simply on what happened but on how those experiences affected your worldview, values, motivations, or behavior.

As always, evidence and action speak volumes. An effective response will move beyond simply describing a circumstance and will instead help the admissions committee understand its impact. For example, an applicant who grew up moving frequently might explain how those experiences fostered adaptability and an ability to build relationships across different communities. Someone who helped care for a family member may discuss how that responsibility shaped their maturity, empathy, or leadership style. Another applicant might describe how being the first person in their family to pursue higher education influenced their ambitions and sense of responsibility.

Finally, remember that this essay is intended to provide context, not simply additional accomplishments. The strongest responses help the admissions committee understand something important about who you are today and how you became that person. If a reader finishes your essay with a deeper appreciation for your journey, perspective, or values, you are on the right track.

The Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the smallest MBA programs in the top set, with recent classes hovering around just 250-275 students.
